Dry Brushing and Health

I am often asked, what is dry brushing and why do you do it. Dry brushing in my opinion is a must! If I told you there's a simple wellness trick that takes less than five minutes a day, costs literally nothing, and helps cleanse your body, inside and out; what would you say? Dry skin brushing has a many health benefits and is really simple to do.

If toxins are allowed to build up and remain in the body, they may eventually cause harm. If they are removed on a regular basis, your system will be kept clean and your body can really work on preventing disease.

Your skin, is the largest organ in the human body. One third of your body’s toxins are excreted through the skin. The largest organ needs attention daily.

Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing

1. Exfoliates Dead Skin

As you age it is beneficial to dry brush at least twice a week to help renew the skin and remove those dead skin cells. Ideally, you should be doing it every day. Your skin will have a healthier appearance.

2. It Stimulates the Lymphatic System and Improves the Immune System

Dry brushing your skin will jump start your lymphatic system. The lymphatic systems job is to remove toxins from your body. If your skin is healthy then it can rid the body of toxins easier. Dry brushing may help boost lymph movement.

3. Reduces Cellulite

Cellulite is often caused by fluid retention, poor circulation, weak collagen structure and increased body fat. There are other factors that also can contribute to cellulite such as hormonal imbalances, medical conditions, genetics, poor diet and toxicity.

Dry brushing can help stimulate the cells and break down toxins from beneath the skin.

4. Unclogs Pores

Dry skin brushing unclogs your skin’s pores and helps your skin absorb more nutrients. It promotes healthy skin!

5. It just feels good!

When we feel good we are less stressed and when we are less stressed the body heals faster.

Finding ways to help eliminate stress is so important. Dry brushing is an easy way that you can do this for yourself!

Dry Brushing is simple to do

  1. Purchase a natural bristle brush (not a synthetic one) with a long handle so that you can reach all areas of your body.

  2. Remove all your clothing and stand in a bathtub/shower to catch the falling dry skin (true but a bit gross). Do not wet the skin.

  3. Starting at the bottom your feet, move in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Always brush towards your heart.

  4. Brush each area several times; overlapping as you go.

  5. Be gentle as you brush over more sensitive areas, such as the breasts. Your skin will become less sensitive the more you dry brush.

  6. Once you’ve brushed your entire body, shower/bathe as you normally would.

  7. After you have showered, pat your skin dry and apply a natural oil such as coconut oil to your entire body.

It is important to be gentle as you dry brush. You do not want to break the skin and cause inflammation. Cleaning your brush with soap and water once a week is important. Let it air dry to avoid mildew.

One last note, I use Grapefruit Oil when I dry brush. Grapefruit is renowned for its cleansing and purifying properties and is frequently used in skin care for its ability to promote the appearance of clear, healthy-looking skin. Grapefruit is an oil which supports circulation and it helps detoxify.
